1)What’s the logline or tagline?
Chastity and Sleaze are on the prowl for a third to join them in their “Date Night”.
2)What do you what do you consider to be the scariest moment is in the film?
Chastity’s torture scene is probably the scariest. The music really sets the tone for that scene.
3)How did you come up with the concept?
An interesting story actually, in how random it was. I was working on someone else’s thriller movie as a Set Photographer and when they finished filming they were giving away all the set props, which included a lot of furniture. I grabbed a bunch of it, and as I was leaving, they asked if I wanted the tub. I had no use for it, so I declined. They said, “Hey man, you never know when you might need it for a movie or something”. Again I declined, but as I was driving home, I thought “You know, they’re right.” So I went back and got it. Here’s why I went back and got it: (Tub pictured above). But now I was sitting with a bloody tub, so I had to come up with an idea to actually use it! And from that, came #DateNightMovie!
4)How many days did it take to film?
We had 4 days of actual shooting, but it took about 4 months to put it together.
5)How did you do the FX stuff?
Mostly practical effects with fake blood and entrails. Another interesting story. There is a fake head in the movie. It too has a random origin story. I was driving down the freeway and out of the corner of my eye I saw a severed head on the side of the highway. So naturally, I had to turn around and head back to that spot. Laying on the side of the highway were two hair dressing mannequins. Naturally I had to find a way to use them in a movie and once we came up with #DNM, the perfect opportunity presented itself.
I also had a filmmaking friend in Vancouver help with the digital coloring and some visual effects. He gave the movie an awesome look that really sets the tone for the movie.
6)How did you decide on the name?
Given that it’s a short, I wanted something memorable. I thought it would help people remember and find it, if I combined the name into a hashtag. Time will tell if it works 😉
7)Where was it filmed?
Entirely in Michigan. We filmed in several locations in Lansing, Detroit, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo.
8)Any other horror projects in the works?
In pre-production for a 30 minute thriller, but depending on #DNM’s success I may look to do a full fledged horror feature. Possibly even a fleshed out version of #DateNightMovie
9)What was the budget?
a paltry $500. Given the zero budget nature, we had limitations on what we could do, but I think without that knowledge most would think we spent a LOT more money. As a filmmaker it’s important to get the most out of every dollar you spend and I think we did a spectacular job in that regard!
10)Any specific movies or stories that influenced the script?
The idea was mostly inspired from a scene in Hostel 2.
11)Will there be a full-length version in the future?
If it does well in the festival circuit there definitely might!
A new Horror Short, #DateNightMovie, is both scary and sexy, sure to satisfy all true horror fans. Michigan-Made (USA) with all local talent, it far exceeds its modest budget. Kara Joy Reed and Rob Jollie star as the two shady characters, Chastity and Sleaze, who are on the prowl for a third to join them in their “Date Night”.
