Q&A Interview With Actor Jimmy Dempster
1) What is the movie One Night Of Fear about?
One night of fear is based on actual events a serious of mysterious murders that took place in the Ocala National Forest in Florida. Our film is a nice little throwback to the eighties slasher films that we all love. I play the character of Rob he’s the male lead and all I want to do is take my friends backpacking and hiking in the forest when things go horribly wrong and we’re stalked by a vicious brutal killer and I try to do everything in my power to save my girlfriend and my friends.
2) What was the scariest scene?
It’s tough to choose just one scene there are several scenes of fear and tension and all out just Blood and Guts throughout the film.costars (Jessica Sonneborn & Suzi Lorraine) both do an amazing job as well as the rest of the cast of keeping the tension High and the Thrills and kills legit !!
3) Do you do anything special to prepare for a role in a horror film?
As far as preparing for a role for a horror film I try not to think about it too much I just try to be as real and organic as I can and just let it flow on set and hope it translates..really I’ve grown up on all these films and I just think unconsciously take a little bit of what I’ve seen in films over the years and I try to put it into my performance. And my two horror films that I’ve done “The Last One” I’m playing a cannibalistic vicious killer which is really fun to do and really fun to play and at the same time my next horror film I did right after that “One Night Of Fear” I was actually the protagonist so it was neat to be able to switch back and forth between the hero and the villain.
4) If you had to rank which genre’s you prefer to act in how far up or down the scale would the horror genre be?
Horror is for me ranked way up at the top of the list not only in projects that I like to do but also I think my favorite genre of film. As far back as I can remember being a kid my first love of film was horror films and of course martial arts film Bruce Lee and all that
So yeah it was definitely a steady diet of horror films and martial arts films as a kid growing up and they definitely had a big influence on me professionally as well as personally.
5) How did you get the part? Do you have an agent that got you the audition or a past history with the filmmakers?
Actually had a past history with the filmmakers. My first year when I was starting out I was doing a lot of smaller roles and some extra work and I did two or three projects with them small parts and just built a good relationship with them. And when it came time for their feature film to be made and they reached out to me we had a meeting they offered me the role and showed me the script I read it and of course I jumped on it right away not only being a fan of the genre but also because I knew I was in good hands having worked with them before.
6) You seem to have done a few slasher/ serial killer rolls? Is typecasting something you get concerned about or embrace?
Yeah, when it comes to actors being typecast that’s not necessarily a bad term in my opinion.I think there’s something worse than being typecast and that’s not cast. Basically, if I get booked I don’t care what they call me haha.
7) How did you get your start as an actor?
I saw one day that they were casting extras for a zombie film in Florida. I submitted and was cast and simultaneous to that it was another film going on that was doing shoots during the day so I was literally working all night on the one film and then going to work the next morning working on the other film not getting paid for either one of them by the way my very first thing I did through all that chaos and craziness I met some of the coolest people that I probably ever met in my life and I just got the bug so to speak and I always remember listening and learning from everyone on set paying attention to every aspect of the process especially keeping my eye on the principal actors and saying to myself you know this is fun and all but Im sure if I wanted to I can do what they are doing I have too much personality to kind of just be standing around or shuffling around you know I want to do what they’re doing (the principals) I said to myself I could do that. So as cool as an experience it was I knew right away that’s not what I was going to be doing with the rest of my life.extra work I think is a great way to get into the business but I think it’s up to the individual that determines whether or not you stay there or move on to bigger things.
8) If you could play and villain or horror icon which one would it be?
Man take your pic haha I think either one of the slasher/horror icons from top to bottom and in between I’d be more than happy to play.I’ve met all these guys at conventions and parties and stuff like that and they’re all just the warmest kindest people you’d ever want to meet and they’re just having so much fun doing what they’re doing. I can only hope I’m lucky enough to have portrayed a character that resonates with people for as long as the others have.
9) What’s your favorite horror film of all time?
Oh man is that really fair? Does anybody really have one single favorite horror film of all time or anything for that matter haha… I get asked this question a lot and my go-to answer is always the same so I have to go with the Exorcist the original Exorcist to me is the greatest horror Thriller of all time for many reasons for one it’s the perfect setup because as crazy and Supernatural as the film can be seen it’s still at the same time incredibly real you know even with all the crazy things going on at no time do I ever stop and-and question could this really happen the whole time you’re just saying to yourself of course it can because it just looks and is portrayed so incredibly real.it always felt like more a documentary to me than a film William Friedkin coming from that documentary background I mean the film doesn’t feel like so much of a film it feels more like a document of real life events happening right before you. And having two daughters myself also adds to it I couldn’t imagine being in that position one Reagan is bad enough..but imagine two Haha
